What is Giving Tuesday? What you need to know and how to participate
As the old song goes, the holiday season is the most wonderful time of the year. It's a time when you gather with friends and family and let your loved ones know how much they mean to you. At the same time, you can't deny that the holidays have become commercialized to the max.
We feel the pressure to buy the perfect gift for others as advertisements from every corner of the internet, television, radio, and store aisles bombard us with messages to buy, buy, buy. It's no coincidence that Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday have become as much a part of the American holiday season as Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, and New Year's.
But while these designated days are all about retailers making money and encouraging people to spend, there's one special day that has rapidly made its mark during the holidays — it's called Giving Tuesday. Even though there's a good chance you've heard of it, you might still be wondering, "What is Giving Tuesday, exactly?"

What is Giving Tuesday?
A self-described "global generosity movement," Giving Tuesday is a global day of giving that was created in 2012. Founded by New York's 92nd Street Y (specifically, its Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact) in collaboration with the United Nations Foundation, Giving Tuesday was designated as the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving. The day was designed as a response to holiday consumerism. The timing was intentional — and, as it turned out, impeccable.
With major media coverage and the #GivingTuesday hashtag going viral on social media, the movement gained momentum. And it wasn't just in the United States — since its inception, Giving Tuesday became an international day of generosity and philanthropy.
In the first year, various Giving Tuesday fundraisers generated more than $10 million in donations. In 2019, that figure soared to nearly $2 billion (with some 20 billion social media impressions of the hashtag)!

Is Giving Tuesday only about donating money?
Giving Tuesday isn't just about donating money. While you can certainly make an online donation on the organization's official site or other fundraisers that resonate with you, Giving Tuesday is really about encouraging people to do good in any form. Maybe it's giving your time, energy, or expertise. For example, you can donate your time to volunteer with a community clean-up or tree planting project. Maybe you can donate clothing to a local women's shelter, or lend your skills to tutor high school students.
Whatever and however you give, the idea behind the movement is to keep the spirit of generosity alive not only for one giving day, but throughout the year.
